About

Why Cognitive Quant?

Cognitive Quant was conceived to help overcome the two primary causes of irrational investment behavior — 'cognitive processing constraints' and 'content deficiency' (or what cognitive psychologists refer to as mindware gap). We have built a platform that is focused on enabling rational decisions rather than just delivering an abundance of quantitative information which can often lead to cognitive overload and overlooked risks. Our intent is to help nudge investors towards a more deliberative investment analysis and decision making process (i.e. System 2 Thinking as articulated by Dr. Kahneman). We are doing this by bringing together Behavioral Science and UX Design (to address cognitive biases & shortcomings) along with advances in Business Reporting Standards, Natural Language Processing and AI (to address content deficiency — especially as it relates to qualitative insights amidst the glut of quantitative metrics). You can read more about the platform and our overall philosophy further at our blog.

Who is Cognitive Quant intended for?

Cognitive Quant is for financial advisors, equity analysts, and individual investors who are actively managing their portfolio(s). Our platform is oriented towards supporting a long-term value investing strategy and is best suited for those who want to improve/adopt a more deliberative, rational and risk-aware investment process. We are doing this by bringing together Behavioral Science, NLP and AI to address cognitive biases and content deficiency (especially as it relates to qualitative insights). Our due diligence platform can also be very valuable for business and management consultants to gain a better understanding of the strengths, weaknesses, competitive positioning and evolving risks of their publicly-listed clients (and their competitors). You can read more about the platform and our overall philosophy further at our blog.

What if I am a beginner investor?

You will very likely do much better with a passive investment approach through ETFs/mutual funds having low expense ratios. Please also note that we are providing a due diligence platform and not a recommendation platform or newsletter.

Data

Where do you source your data from?

We source our data from multiple sources. Our financial data is primarily sourced from Sharadar via Quandl (part of Nasdaq, Inc). In addition, for some of our differentiated quant metrics, we rely on data sourced directly from SEC filings. Our discount rates are informed by Prof. Damodaran's data. We source real-time price, news, and other market data from IEX Cloud. All qualitative insights (concentration risks, risk factor summaries, legal proceedings and likely outcomes, fundamental sentiments etc.) are generated from SEC filings by our proprietary algorithms.

How often is the data updated?

Most of our data is updated on a daily basis (at least) and many are updated periodically on an intra-day basis.
